The Type 302, 304, 304L and 305 alloys are the most susceptible of the austenitic stainless steels to stress corrosion cracking in halides because of their relatively low nickel content. Conditions which cause stress corrosion cracking are(1) presence of halide ions (generally chloride), (2) residual tensile stresses, and (3) temperatures in excess of about 120°F (49°C).
The 304L #4 finish stainless steel sheet is a variation of chromium nickel alloys. It has 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. It has a low carbon content, which makes it safe for use in most welding construction operations.
304/304L stainless sheet coil and sheet is part of the austenitic family of stainless steel. 304 grades contain a lower level of carbon than 302 and 304/304L has a lower carbon level than straight grade 304.

DescriptionType 304 Stainless Steel is the most widely used of the austenitic (chromium/nickel) stainless steels. In the annealed condition it is essentially non magnetic and becomes slightly magnetic with the application of cold work. Type 304L Stainless Steel is preferred in welding applications to exclude the formation of chromium carbides during cooling in the heat affected region of the
Oct 23, 2001 · Grade 304 stainless steel is excellent in a wide range of atmospheric environments and many corrosive media. It is subject to pitting and crevice corrosion in warm chloride environments, and to stress corrosion cracking above 60 °C (approximate).
304 Stainless Steel Sheet, is the most popular and economical of the stainless steels. 304 Stainless Sheet offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. 304 Stainless Sheet may become slightly magnetic when worked and is not heat treatable.. SS 304 is a stainless steel with applications ranging from the manufacturing of chemical equipment, kitchen and cooking utensils and equipment, to surgical tools and textile dyeing equipment. The metal is characterized by its corrosion resistance, especially in cases of oxidation and salt water. Otherwise referred to as Grade 304 or Type 304, it is the most commonly utilized grade of stainless
Each alloy represents an excellent combination of corrosion resistance and fabricability. This combination of properties is the reason for the extensive use of these alloys which represent nearly one half of the total U.S. stainless steel production. Type 304 represents the largest volume followed by Type 304L.
AISI Type 304L Stainless Steel CategoriesMetal; Ferrous Metal; Heat Resisting; Stainless Steel; T 300 Series Stainless Steel. Material NotesAustenitic Cr Ni stainless steel. Better corrosion resistance than Type 302. High ductility, excellent drawing, forming, and spinning properties.
From cookware to chemical processing equipment, 304 stainless steel is a good all around choice for a wide range of applications. It maintains its corrosion resistance in temperatures up to 1500° F. 304/304L stainless steel contains less carbon than standard 304 for better weldability.
